face mask essentials

Elemis Papaya Enzyme Peel, Sanctuary Thermal Detox Mask, Origins Drink Up Intensive

Face masks are probably my favourite part of my skincare routine - I love the almost instant gratification that you get after using a good one and I find it so much easier and more satisfying to use a weekly treatment than to remember to use different daily solutions for months on end. Different products are rotated depending on what my skin needs, but there are three solid categories I consider essential; a radiance boosting exfoliating number, a detoxifying charcoal mask and something for an often necessary moisture boost. Within these categories I have my long time favourites and different ones to chop and change with. One of my favourite things to do once weekly is a pamper evening inspired by Anna's 'Triple Threat Facial' and do one after the other in order to give my skin an often essential kick up the arse.

My favourite chemical exfoliating mask is a toss up between the cult favourite REN Glycolactic Radiance Renewal mask and this Elemis Papaya Enzyme Peel. Both deliver the same results, both are around the same price and both smell fruity and delicious. Depending on where you buy you can get either of these for about €30 and they're really worth investing in if your skin is looking lackluster. You'll be hard pressed to find a decent chemical exfoliant at high street prices but take the plunge - it's worth it for the results.

After my skin has been exfoliated I'll give it another quick cleanse with my Clarisonic and then slap on an anti-blemish detox mask. One of my favourites for this is Lush's Catastrophie Cosmetic which rings in at abut a fiver but needs to be used up in a fortnight which gets a thumbs down from me. Another goodie is the Neutrogena Visibly Clear 2 in 1 wash/mask which I would never use as a wash but it's a great cooling clay-based mask if you're on a budget. My favourite in winter is the Sanctuary one pictured as it warms up to loosen your skin and penetrate deeper - however I'd steer clear in this heat.

Finally, my favourite category is that of the moisturising mask. I've been using the Super Facialist by Una Brennan Rose Hydrate moisture mask and it's nice as a quick boost but I nearly always finish off my skincare session with a large dollop of my holy grail Origins mask which I've talked about before. I've been using this sometimes twice weekly for ten months now and there's still loads left in my tube so definitely no buyers remorse here!

What are your favourite face masks that you couldn't live without & what do you think of my picks?

  1. Three face masks in a row?! Wow, that's intense! It sounds like just what I need though as my skin's been a little dehydrated this winter. I bought the Origins Drink Up Overnight Intensive Mask though and omg, it's looove. It smells like fruit juice! I love anything fruity smelling, which is why I also love the REN Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask. I'd love to get the Invisible Pores Detox Mask next and then I can do my own triple threat facial!
